The aim of gender equality in the workplace is to achieve broadly equal opportunities and outcomes for women and men. In Australia, the gender gap in the workforce is still prevalent. Women continue to earn less than men and are less likely to advance their careers as far as men.
Achieving gender equality is important for workplaces not only because it is ‘the right thing to do,’ but because it is linked to the success of our overall economic performance. Workplace gender equality is associated with:
- Improved national productivity and economic growth
- Increased organisational performance
- Enhanced ability of companies to attract talent and retain employees, and
- Enhanced organisational reputation
However, equality is the destination and we need to be courageous to challenge stereotypes, fight biases, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements in order to create an equitable environment where equality can flourish. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.
