World No. 1 Ash Barty has announced her engagement to her long-term partner Garry Kissick, capping off a stellar year for the Australian tennis champion.

Barty shared a photo of the pair on Instagram on Tuesday evening, with the caption “future husband” with a ring and heart emoji. Kissick shared a similar photo with the words, “I love you @ashbarty”.

The couple have been together since they met in 2016 and have kept their relationship largely private, away from the public eye.

Sporting starts from around the world left their congratulations on Barty’s Instagram post, with Simona Halep leaving a string of heart emojis, and Sam Stosur writing: “OMG. Congrats. So happy for you both.”

Barty’s former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua wrote: “Best news EVER beautiful couple”.

Tennis Australia wrote: “Congratulations to you both!”

It’s been a notable week for Barty, as she also reached a milestone of holding the year-end Number 1 world ranking for the third year in a row. She joins Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams and Chris Evert as the only players to achieve the milestone.

In 2021, Barty has won five WTA titles, including her maiden Wimbledon title, becoming only the second Australian in history to win Wimbledon. She held the Wimbledon trophy 41 years after her hero, Evonne Goolagong Cawley last did so.

“The stars aligned for me over the past fortnight. It’s incredible that it happened to fall on the 50th anniversary of Evonne’s [Goolagong Cawley] first title here too,” Barty said at the time.

Barty also won bronze at the Olympic Games this year, playing in the mixed doubles with John Peers in Tokyo.

Australian crowds can look forward to seeing Barty play back on home soil in January, when the Australian Open gets underway.
