Hannah Gadsby wins Emmy for Nanette

Over the weekend, Hannah Gadsby received further impetus to rescind on the comment she made in her popular show ‘Nanette’ that she ought to quit comedy.

She beat the likes of American heavyweights including Beyonce, Adam Sandler, Amy Schumer and James Corden to win an Emmy for “Outstanding writing for a variety special.”

Earlier this morning Gadsby tweeted her reaction to the win: “Know that our stories matter; our humanity matters.”

In her humble, down-to-earth style, she posted a Tweet back in July when she found out she’d been nominated; “Nominated for an Emmy! Well I’m pretty chuffed,” along with a video of her two dogs cocking their heads in an unbearably adorable pose.

Gadsby took Nanette around Australia and the UK for eighteen months, beginning in 2017. In 2018, she recorded a show at Sydney’s Opera House, which was acquired by Netflix, and won her a Peabody Award.

The 70-minute show is an extraordinary experience that will send viewers on a dizzying convulsive rollercoaster of emotions; never has a stand-up set made me sob as much as I laughed.

The show has also won Best Comedy Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2017, Best Comedy at the 2017 Adelaide Fringe, the Barry Award for the most outstanding comedy act at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Best Comedy Performer  at the annual Helpmann Awards.

Hannah Gadsby, who hails from Tasmania, is currently on tour with her follow-up ‘Douglas’, which will land in Australia in December. Shows in Hobart and Canberra have already sold out. Netflix has also already jumped to it and acquired the rights to ‘Douglas.’

The main Emmy Awards for 2019 will be held on Monday September 23, Australian time.
