Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall dies

Legendary actress and one of the leading ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Lauren Bacall, has died at age 89.

Born Betty Joan Perske, she was renowned for her husky voice and sultry presence in over 60 film credits, including How to Marry a Millionaire and The Mirror has Two Faces

She started her career as a model, before emerging as a Hollywood leading lady in her first starring film role, opposite Humphrey Bogart in 1944’s To Have or Not To Have

‘Bogie and Bacall’ became one of Hollywood’s legendary couples, staring together a number of times on-screen, including in The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948). They were also married off-screen, until Bogart’s death in 1957.

She also found success on stage, winning Tony Awards for Broadway musicals Applause in 1970 and Woman of the Year in 1981.

At 72 she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Mirror Has Two Faces,  and won an Honorary Academy Award in 2010 “in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures”.
