IBM Australia’s transparency on gender targets

When it comes to the number of women in leadership positions at IBM Australia, the technology company has one distinct disadvantage: it’s in an industry that’s still male dominated.

That means IBM needs to focus on targets at all levels: the board, executive, people managers and the overall female employee population.

Interestingly, IBM boasted 33% female board representation in 2011, with 28% of its people manager population female, and a female executive rate of 19%. This is despite its total female employee population in 2011 being just 29%.

The company’s got some work to do and is no doubt up against some significant challenges – particularly when it comes to the gap between men and women graduating from computer science and engineering degrees in Australia. But the transparency of its achievements against its established targets gives it a place here.
