Matildas beat Chile 1-0 in Adelaide & continue to break crowd attendance records

The Matildas have ended 2019 with another win against Chile on Tuesday night in Adelaide.

The 1-0 win marks the second time the Matildas have beaten the South Americans in four days, this time only narrowly coming away with the victory.

Emily Gielnik scored Australia’s only goal in the 23rd minute, while Captain Sam Kerr blew a penalty and had multiple other shots saved.

The first-half saw Ellie Carpenter and Tameka Yallop fail to convert promising goal-scoring chances, meaning the Australians remained only one goal ahead despite having two-thirds of possession.

The Matildas dominated possession again in the second-half, but didn’t manage to increase the score line against the world’s 37th ranked side.

On her unexpected penalty miss, Kerr said it’s important to pick yourself up after a disappointment and that she tends not to dwell on things.

“Obviously the first camp back there are a few cobwebs. But we’re happy with the two wins and a clean sheet tonight,” she said after the final whistle.

 

Since the announcement of the Matildas’ new equal pay deal, the team has been drawing in big, record-breaking crowds for their games in Australia.

On Saturday, the Australians had a 2-1 win against Chile and broke a record for the highest-attended women’s football international in Australian history, with a crowd of 20,029 fans.

The 10,342 strong crowd attendance at Coopers Stadium in Adelaide on Tuesday was the largest crowd to gather for a women’s soccer international in the South Australian capital. The previous benchmark in Adelaide was 5,168 for a 2006 match against China, the last time the Matildas played in the city.
