When 86, 174 people packed into the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the final of the 2020 T20 Women’s World Cup on International Women’s Day, it was a defining moment in the history of women’s sport.

Perhaps what many attendees and those who followed along at home weren’t aware of though, was the many dramatic ups and downs the Australian Women’s Cricket Team had experienced in getting there.

A new documentary following the Australian Women’s Cricket Team’s experience through the 2020 T20 World Cup series, is set to be released this week, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the journey to the World Cup final and the bold, four-year effort to set a new world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event.

The Record, produced by Her Films, a production company by producer Nicole Minchin and journalist Angela Pippos, focuses on the pressure the Australian players felt to live up to the high expectations placed on them throughout the tournament, and the many unpredictable moments that nearly hampered their rise to victory. It also puts a spotlight on what can happen when serious investment is put into women’s sport.

“The biggest crowd we’ve played in front of is 5,000 and they’re telling us they want to fill the MCG,” Beth Mooney’s voice says at the start of trailer for The Record.

“How are you possibly going to do that?” Alyssa Healy asks.

The effort to set a new record for attendance at a women’s sporting event by filling the MCG heavily relied on Australia’s national side getting into the final. But, as it happened, not everything was going to plan. Players were out of form, the team suffered an unexpected loss, star player Ellyse Perry suffered a heartbreaking injury, wild weather was wreaking havoc and an unpredictable virus outbreak hovered in the background.

In the trailer, Healy admits the team “blatantly lied” to the media about how much pressure they were under to get into the decider.

However, this enormous pressure was offset by some heroic on field performances from Australian players and unwavering leadership from captain Meg Lanning as the team pushed through to eventually win the final.

The documentary offers key insights from players including captain Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney, Rachael Haynes, Molly Strano, as well as Cricket Australia executives.

The Record will be available on Amazon Prime from February 12. Watch the excellent trailer below.
