Saudi Arabia’s first female athletes labelled “prostitutes”

The first two females to represent Saudi Arabia in the Olympic Games received a warm welcome in London, but they copped some criticism back home.

Track athlete Sarah Attar became the first female track athlete from Saudi Arabia to participate in the Olympics yesterday after she competed in the 800m heats.

To compete in the race, the 19-year-old had to wear a head cover, a long-sleeved top and black leggings. Although she finished last, she received plenty of praise from the crowd as she crossed the line.

But back home, Attar and fellow female competitor Wojdan Ali Seraj (judo) were apparently tagged as “Prostitutes of the Olympics” or “Olympic Whores” on Twitter.
