Women activists arrested for wearing men’s prayer shawls

Four women were detained at Jerusalem’s Western Wall on Sunday for wearing prayer shawls reserved for male worshippers only.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the women, from activist organisation “Women of the Wall”, were served with a restraining order from the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court, forbidding them from entering the city’s sacred religious site, the Western Wall plaza, for 50 days.

According to Israeli law, it is forbidden to conduct a religious ceremony “contrary to accepted practice” at a holy site, or one that may “hurt the feelings of other worshippers”.

By wearing Jewish prayer shawls (tallitot), traditionally worn by men, the four women allegedly contravened this law.
