Serena Williams storms into Wimbledon Final, less than a year after giving birth

Serena Williams
Serena Williams has stared down many tournament grand finals in her time, but none quite as remarkable as the one she’ll face at Wimbledon tomorrow night against Germany’s Angelique Kerber.

That’s because this tournament is just the second that Williams has competed in after a traumatic childbirth ten months ago in which she “almost died”.  This tournament is the one she returned to with a 25th seeding after leaving the circuit on maternity leave as World Number One. This is the tournament that no one really believed she was capable of winning.

Last night however, Williams proved there was really no reason to doubt her, beating Germany’s Julia Goerges in straight sets in just 70 minutes.

“It’s crazy. I don’t even know how to feel because I literally didn’t think I’d do this well in my fourth tournament back,” said Williams.

“I don’t have anything to lose and I feel I can play so free. That’s what I’m doing.

“This is not inevitable for me, I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and almost didn’t make it to be honest. I couldn’t even walk to my mailbox, so it’s definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final.

“I’m enjoying every moment.”

In March this year, Williams said her comeback and her catsuit (preventing post-birth blood clots) was a tribute to the women who had come against physical and mental trauma to emerge stronger than ever.

“It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically with their body, to come back and have confidence and believe in themselves,” she said.

“Moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and had to come back and try to be fierce, in the middle of everything. That’s what this represents. It’s exciting. And you can’t beat a catsuit, right?”

You can’t beat Serena Williams, that’s for sure.
