The Golden Globe nominations were announced overnight, with four Aussie, female actors in the lineup. Cate Blanchett, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman and Toni Collette all secured nominations for their roles across motion picture dramas, comedies and television series.

Nicole Kidman secured a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama for her role in HBO’s wildly successful series Big Little Lies, based on the bestselling novel by Australian author Liane Moriarty.

Margot Robbie was nominated for best supporting role in a motion picture, for her portrayal of a Fox News associate producer in the Roger Ailes centred biopic, Bombshell

The American drama web television miniseries, Unbelievable, based on the true crime events of rape cases in Washington and Colorado between 2008 – 2011 secured a total of four nominations, including Toni Collette for Best Performance by an actress in a series supporting role.

Cate Blanchett also secured her tenth Golden Globe nomination for the lead role in Canadian comedy, Where’d you go, Bernadette, based on a 2012 novel about a professional woman and mother who suddenly go missing.

In 2014, Blanchett won won Best Actress in a Drama motion picture for her portrayal of an over-medicated rich-man’s wife in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

Disappointingly, the Best Director Category remains absent of women; with all five nominations taken by men. The news came as a surprise to many in the industry, given so many acclaimed films in 2019 were directed by women. These included Greta Gerwig’s remake of  Little Women,  Lulu Wang’s The Farewell and Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us.

In 2017, Gerwig took home the top accolade for her film, Lady Bird , and also secured an Oscar for the same; making her only the fifth woman in history to be nominated. only In 2008 Kathryn Bigelow received the same award for war blockbuster, The Hurt Locker.

Best Screenplay was another category devoid of women nominees in 2019.

The ceremony will be held on January 6 in the new year, and will be hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.
