Gina Cass-Gottlieb will chair the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission from March 2022, replacing the outgoing Rod Simms in the high-profile role leading the regulator.
She’ll be the first woman to serve as chair, following her work as a partner with Gilbert + Tobin for more than two decades.
Cass-Gottlieb’s also previously contributed to the ACCC’s enforcement and regulatory investigations in the past, including as a lead partner on the ACCC’s investigation into criminal cartel conduct at ANZ, Deutsche and Citi bank.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg made the announcement on Tuesday, saying he’d written to the different states and territories to support the appointment of the antitrust litigator.
On her appointment, G+T managing partner Danny Gilbert described it as “an enormous tribute to both Gina and to G+T. “I am very proud of Gina and the truly talented team she has built around her.”
Another G+T partner, Elizabeth Avery, spoke of Cass-Gottlieb’s “brilliance, dedication and hard work”, as well as the mentorship she’s provided to the full team.
