Six people, including two young police officers, have died after an ambush at a rural property in Queensland.
Four police officers were met with gunfire while visiting the property in Wieambilla on a job related to a missing persons report. Two of these officers – a man aged 26 and a woman aged 29 – died at the scene in what has been described as an “execution-style” shooting, while the other two survived after taking cover and were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A bystander, described as a neighbour, was also shot and declared deceased.
A siege situation ensued at the property, with two men and a woman fatally shot during a confrontation with police just after 10.30pm.
“What happened yesterday is two police officers were murdered in cold blood. They were executed,” Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers told News Breakfast.
“They’re both under 30, they’ve hardly lived life. Their lives have been cut short. I spoke to the male police officer’s father last night and he was distraught. He’s just lost for words.”
“This is such a tragedy, it should never have happened.”
Of the two officers who managed to escape, one was a female officer who had joined the police force only 9 weeks ago.
Ian Leavers spoke about the bravery of the frontline police involved in the incident.
“There were 16 police who went in and retrieved their colleagues. They were hoping they could get them out to get them some medical assistance but sadly that was futile. Whilst they did that they were under heavy gunfire,” he said.
Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the horrific incident was devastating for the victims’ families and the police force.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the officers’ families, friends and colleagues and our thoughts are with them during this extremely difficult time,” Carroll said.
“I would like to pay tribute to all police and first responders who assisted at the scene and are continuing to respond this evening.
“Tragically, this is the largest loss of life the QPS has suffered in one single incident in recent times.
“It is devastating news and I know it will be deeply felt across Queensland.
“It is sad reminder of the unpredictable nature of policing and the incredible dangers our officers face while protecting our community.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the police officers who died.
“Terrible scenes in Wieambilla and a heartbreaking day for the families and friends of the Queensland Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. My condolences to all who are grieving tonight – Australia mourns with you.”
Queensland Police said the circumstances of the incident will be investigated and overviewed by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner, and would be subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
