Why women are still missing from the expert spotlight

In a world striving for gender equality, it’s disheartening to see that women are still significantly underrepresented as experts in influential spaces.

Globally, women make up less than 24 per cent of news sources and a mere 31 per cent of paid speakers. This glaring absence doesn’t just stall the progress of gender equality; it robs society of the countless benefits that come from diverse perspectives—think job creation, economic growth, and enhanced business success.

The World Economic Forum projects that, at our current pace, achieving gender parity could take another 131 years. That’s a sobering thought.

While there’s a wealth of research dissecting what fuels gender inequality, little attention has been paid to how a woman’s relationship with the term “expert” shapes her journey to becoming one. My recent study, Hidden Figures: Where Are All the Female Experts?, seeks to bridge this gap by exploring how this relationship impacts women’s confidence and opportunities.

So, how do we elevate our expertise and amplify our impact? Here are four powerful themes unearthed in the Hidden Figures research that can ignite change:

1. Confront the “ick” of expert

Let’s face it: the word “expert” can feel loaded for many women. It often conjures up feelings of “awkwardness,” “peacocking,” and yes, even “a visual of a man’s face.” I call this the “ick of expert.” This negative association can deter women from claiming their expertise, making it crucial to unpack these feelings. Take a moment to reflect: What does the word “expert” mean to you? Dive deep into your feelings and challenge yourself to see it through a lens one of opportunity rather than discomfort.

2. Define your own “enough”

Too often, women feel the pressure to tick every box before they can feel enough to label themselves as experts. However, the Hidden Figures research exposed that many women lack clarity on what “enough” looks like making owning their expertise elusive. Ask yourself: How much is enough, and who gets to decide? Look to inspiring women in your life and create a checklist of the traits that resonate with you. Use that as a foundation to craft your own definition of expertise.

3. Embrace the fear

Fear of judgment and the nagging sense of being an imposter can stifle women’s voices in public arenas. Yet, this fear can be transformed into a launching pad for greater impact. Enter micro bravery—taking small, courageous steps each day. Identify micro-actions that stretch your comfort zone and challenge yourself to undertake one daily. Over time, you’ll build resilience and confidence, allowing your expert voice to be heard.

4. Shine a light on hidden igures

The research highlights a striking absence of visible, diverse female role models. Many women feel disconnected from those who present as experts online—often with their “glitter and blazers.” If we want to cultivate a richer tapestry of experts, we must celebrate the Hidden Figures already among us. Use your platform to elevate the visibility of women in your community who inspire you. Share their stories, advocate for their expertise, and help them seize opportunities to shine.

The landscape is dotted with capable women eager to make their mark. Yet, their complicated relationship with the term “expert” often keeps them shrouded in invisibility.
