Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, has purchased a multi-million dollar stake in the Women’s Super League team, Chelsea.

Ohanian, who is the founder of Reddit, will join the club as an investor and board member, buying a 10 per cent share, believed to be worth more than AUD$41 million.

On his X account, Ohanian posted images of Chelsea kits with the names of his children, Olympia and Adira, printed on the back.

”I’ve bet big on women’s sports before, and I’m doing it again,” he wrote. “I’m proud to announce that I’m joining Chelsea as an investor and board member. I’m honored for the chance to help this iconic club become every American’s favorite WSL team and much, much more.”

Ohanian’s latest investment puts the value of the women’s club at £200m (AUD$413m).

Chelsea Women has recently undergone re-structuring — in September last year, it appointed Aki Mandhar to become the first chief executive of the team. Mandhar was previously the global sporting director and general manager of The Athletic, the sports platform owned by The New York Times.

Ohanian has previously invested in women’s football. He was a former owner of American club side Angel City FC — which was co-founded by Natalie Portman. Ohanian was the club’s largest shareholder until it was sold for AUD$397m in 2024. The 42-year old also owns shares in the TGL Golf League.

Ohanian founded Athlos NYC, a women-only track and field event that hosted its inaugural event last September with winners taking home a silver crown worth $US25,000 (AUD$38,500) from Tiffany and Co.
