Trump asks Supreme Court to overturn E Jean Carroll verdict

E Jean Carroll

US President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to overturn the civil case that found he sexually abused and defamed E Jean Carroll.

In 2023, Carroll won $5 million in damages after a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against her.

Trump’s lawyers argued that the judge who oversaw the case made a number of errors that improperly allowed evidence to be presented that influenced how the jury viewed Trump.

It comes after a federal appeals court upheld the jury’s verdict last year.

In 2023, Carroll said the jury’s decision meant the world could finally know the truth.

“This victory is not just for me but for every woman who has suffered because she was not believed,” she said in a statement at the time.

Carroll is a writer and former talkshow TV host. She testified in 2023 alleging that Trump sexually assaulted her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in the mid-90s.

A second defamation trial last year resulted in a jury ordering Trump to pay Carroll an additional $83.3 million in damages.

Trump’s last chance of overturning the jury’s civil finding now hinges on whether the Supreme Court takes on the case.

In a filing to the Supreme Court, Trump’s lawyers argued Judge Kaplan made an error in allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them years ago. They also argued the jury should not have been shown the ‘Access Hollywood tape’ that caught Trump saying he gropes and kisses women.
