Tom Silvagni has been sentenced to six years and two months in jail for raping a woman at his own home in 2024.
Silvagni, the son of former AFL player Stephen Silvagni, must serve a non-parole period of three years and three months.
The sentence was handed down today by Victorian County Court Judge Gregory Lyon.
Silvagni was found guilty of two counts of rape on December 5 after a two-week trial.
He denied digitally raping the young woman, his friend’s girlfriend, at his Melbourne home in the early hours of January 14, 2024.
The court heard that Silvagni pretended to be the woman’s boyfriend before digitally raping her twice. In the days that followed, he doctored an Uber receipt to make it look like the woman’s boyfriend had left the house at a different time.
During the trial, Silvagni’s identity had been kept from the public due to a suppression order put in place to prevent the media from publishing his name. The County Court of Victoria lifted the suppression order last Thursday.
Judge Greg Lyon told the court on Wednesday morning that Silvagni’s victim had shown courage throughout the trial, noting her “psychological and emotional trauma”.
Last week, the woman raped by Silvagni delivered a victim impact statement in court.
“Tom Silvagni, you raped me. Not once, but twice,” she said. “You know this, I know this, and now so does everyone else.
“Do you know how scary it is to have a big, strong man hold my hands behind my back.Every day of my life I am [taken] back to that vision.”
