All-female team to lead commercial solar installation for the first time

An all-female-led commercial solar project is set to make waves in the renewable energy sector, in what is believed to be a world-first.

The initiative evolved with the aim to reflect strong female representation across Smart Commercial Solar and Officeworks, with the support of organisations like Australian Women in Solar Energy (AWISE) in driving productive conversations.

Set for installation in mid-2025, the plan is to have a 96kW rooftop solar system installed at Officeworks Bundoora in Melbourne through a team of entirely women. At every stage, female professionals will be in charge, including analysis, sales, project management, engineering, installation and performance marketing.

While women have long played integral roles in the renewable energy sector, this project is unique for having every single function carried out by female experts.

“Women have been making significant contributions to the solar industry for years, but this project provides an unprecedented opportunity to showcase their expertise across every stage of a commercial-scale project,” said Sophie Wright, the founding director of AWISE.

“By increasing visibility and breaking down barriers, we can attract more women into the industry and help build a more diverse, skilled workforce.”

Women currently make up only 25 per cent of the energy workforce, and this project aims to inspire more women to pursue careers in renewable energy.

With Australia targeting 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030, the industry faces a major skill shortage. And yet, this latest project highlights an opportunity for women to fill the gap.

“This project is about showcasing the incredible work of the women on our team, but also about inspiring the next generation. The renewable energy sector is growing fast, and if we want to see the industry grow and succeed, we need more women to see themselves in these careers,” said Kathryn Hoogesteger, Chief of Staff at Smart Commercial Solar.

Managing Director of Officeworks, Sarah Hunter says the project aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability and gender equality, and that they’re “incredibly proud” to be part of it.

“Supporting women across all aspects of our business is a key focus for us, and this project is an exciting demonstration of that in action,” said Hunter.
