Dr Helen Haines

Dr Helen Haines

Seat: Indi
Dr Helen Haines is the current independent member for the seat of Indi.

She was first elected to parliament in 2019, following in the footsteps of the former member for Indi, Cathy McGowan who was also an independent.

Haines’ election made history, when she became the first independent to ever succeed another independent. Indi is the electorate where the ‘Voices Of’ community group movement was founded.

Before entering parliament, Haines was a nurse, midwife and rural health expert. She grew up on a dairy farm.

In parliament, Haines’ policy priorities have been pushing for a federal integrity commission, supporting action on climate change, and different policies affecting regional and rural Australians.
