The woman killed on Monday night in a drive-by shooting south of Campbelltown has been identified as Kim Duncan. The 65-year-old grandmother died in the front lounge room of her home after being shot in the leg by occupants of a runaway black sedan.

Shortly after 11pm Monday night, emergency services were called to Duncan’s home on Dickens Road in Ambarvale, after reports were made of a shooting outside.

Police arrived at the scene to find Duncan suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg after an unidentified vehicle had fired several times at the home before driving off.

Paramedics worked for about an hour trying to save Duncan, but she died at the scene. A neighbour described the moments after the shooting to 9News, when the victim’s son arrived at the scene.

“He was down the road at a friend’s house, and as he got closer to his house, he saw the people there shooting the house,” the neighbour said. “As we come outside, we just hear the son yelling, ‘My mum’s been shot.’ He was pretty upset, devastated. And then her daughter turned up a bit later and she was a mess.”

Duncan’s son’s partner was also in the home at the time but was uninjured. Another neighbour told the Guardian Australia the residential street has “a lot of police presence” every few weeks.

“Dickens Road always gets the negative [attention] but we do have some really nice people that live on Dickens Road and in [the] Campbelltown [area] in general,” she said

Police believe the shooting was targeted, but that they are unsure whether Duncan herself was the target. NSW Police Superintendent Grant Healey said the family are known to police.

“It’s abhorrent,” Healey said. “Somebody coming up to a house and putting shots off is totally reckless and the consequences are catastrophic. We have a 65-year-old grandmother who has been shot in the leg.”

“It’s tragic, the grandmother of your children’s been shot by cowards that stood out the front of the house.”

Police have appealed to locals for CCTV or dashcam footage. They have also commenced Strike Force Apslawn with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au
