Victorian MP Georgie Purcell has announced she is having a baby with her partner, federal MP Josh Burns, with the pair expecting a baby girl in early 2026.
“It’s a big moment for us, and I’m so excited, ” Purcell wrote on social media on Sunday.
“As I prepare for motherhood (beyond cats, dogs, horses and sheep), I carry with me the stories of my abortions. They are not only part of my advocacy as a politician, but also part of who I am.”
“I am more grateful than ever before to have had access to choice so that I could do this on my own terms and timeline, and will always fight for everybody to have the same.”
Purcell also revealed she’s been receiving weekly medical checks due to her autoimmune disease making her pregnancy high-risk.
An Animal Justice Party member representing Northern Victoria, Purcell noted that she’s having “a vegan pregnancy”, and she’s “been feeling good” among the business of life as a politician. She said she’ll be working up until the end of the parliamentary year and will return to sitting weeks in February before contesting the state election in 2026.
In her post, Purcell noted that this is the first pregnancy she has chosen to continue and she will always fight for reproductive rights.
Josh Burns is a Labor Party member for the federal Melbourne seat of Macnamara.
“I know that two members from two different parliaments having a baby is a bit unique, and there is bound to be interest in it,” Purcell wrote.
“I want to say an enormous thank you to the very, very tight group of friends and family for supporting me over the past few months (and for keeping our secret to share on our own terms),” Purcell wrote.
She thanked her staff in particular for being “incredibly kind and caring” while sharing the private moments.
“I am the face of the work we do, but I have a whole engine room behind me that I just coudn’t do any of this without,” she wrote.
Burns has a daughter, Tia, whom he had with his ex-wife, and Georgie wrote that she’s looking forward to “watching Tia step into the role of big sister”.
In his own Instagram post, Burns wrote that he and Purcell’s “little baby already has the most excited and loving big sister in Tia” and that “she’ll have a home full of animals, love and fun”.
“Next year, my team and I will keep working hard for the community we love, but I also plan on being a present and involved dad every step of the way,” wrote Burns.
“I’m over the moon excited and can’t wait for this next chapter with my beautiful partner, Georgie, who I love with all my heart.”
