The Clintons refuse to testify in House Epstein investigation

Bill and Hillary Clinton refuse to testify in House Epstein investigation

Hillary and Bill Clinton are refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena to testify in an investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Their refusal has prompted the Republican-led House Oversight Committee to prepare contempt of Congress proceedings against the former president and former secretary of state.

In a statement on social media, the Clintons said the subpoenas directed at them were “legally invalid”.

The Clintons  said they had already tried to provide what “little information” they had to help with the investigation.

In response, House Oversight Committee chair James Comer told reporters: “No one’s accusing the Clintons of any wrongdoing. We just have questions.”

His comments came after Bill Clinton did not show up for a scheduled deposition on Tuesday. Hillary Clinton is scheduled to appear on Wednesday.

Comer said the committee would move next week to hold Bill Clinton in contempt and do the same for Hillary Clinton if she failed to show up.

In their statement, the Clintons accused Comer, a Republican, of a process that could be “literally designed to result in our imprisonment”.

“We will forcefully defend ourselves,” they said.

“There is no plausible explanation for what you are doing other than partisan politics.”

Former US president Bill Clinton has never been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein, however he did have a friendship with the late convicted sex trafficker in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Comer said Epstein visited the White House 17 times while Clinton was president, and that Clinton had flown on Epstein’s plane several times.

Bill Clinton also appears in several photos that were released by the US Department of Justice in December.

Clinton has always denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.
