Cowardly. Painful. Shocking: At least 12 dead in Bondi terror attack on Hanukkah event

More than 1000 people had gathered for the first day of Hanukkah, on a warm Sunday afternoon at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.

Shortly after 6:30 pm, that day of celebration turned into one of horror, as at least two gunmen intentionally attacked the Jewish community.

Police confirmed after 10 pm on Sunday that at least 12 people had been killed, including one of the gunmen. A second gunman was in a critical condition. A further 29 people were taken to hospital, including at least one child. Two police officers are among the injured.

NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon, said the shooting had been designated a terrorist attack.

It was one designed to inflict as much pain as possible on the community and divide Australians.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said his heart bleeds with the Jewish community and that all Australians must stand up to support them.

“This cowardly act of violence is painful and shocking to see,” Minns said.

“This attack was designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah.

“What should have been a night of peace and joy, celebrated in that community with families and supporters, has been shattered by this horrifying, evil attack.”

“It’s the responsibility of all Australians to wrap their arms around Australia’s Jewish community, to help them get through this period…

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said from a press conference in Canberra that, “The evil that was unleashed at Bondi Beach is beyond comprehension.”

“The trauma and loss is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare.”

“On behalf of all Australians to the Jewish community, we stand with you, we embrace you, and we reaffirm tonight that you have every right to be proud of who you are and what you believe. There is no place for this hate in our nation.”

Chris Minns also noted the response from emergency services and also from bystanders.

Tonight, we saw extraordinary acts of personal courage and bravery.

“It’s worth remembering that in all of this evil and all of this sadness, there are still wonderful Australians prepared to risk their lives.”
