NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant is set to take her first extended break in two years at the end of the month, when the state ends most of its remaining COVID-19 restrictions.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Deputy Chief Health Officer Marianne Gale will take on Dr Chant’s role from February 28, when she is scheduled to take three weeks’ annual leave.

It marks Dr Kerry Chant’s longest break since the start of the pandemic. She took just two days of leave last year.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard recognised Dr Chant’s work ethic, saying she had worked “flat out” for over two years.

“She works 18 to 20-hour days, 7 days a week. Any leave she wants, she should get, and we should double it. It is a long-awaited and extremely well-deserved break,” he told the SMH.

Most of NSW’s COVID-19 restrictions are expected to end on February 27, including indoor mask mandates. Public transport services are also expected to regular timetables at the end of February.

Last year, Dr Chant was named NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year, the highest honour in the NSW Women of the Year Awards. She was recognised for her tireless efforts in keeping the state’s populations safe with her expert advice.

Dr Chant has been the public face of the NSW’s pandemic response, and has earned great respect from the public for her efforts.
