A group of five young women had eggs thrown at them near Bondi beach on Saturday night, with police investigating the incident as an antisemitic attack.
Investigators believe the women were targeted by three young men in a silver Mazda that later crashed onto a curb with the engine running, that same night.
The men allegedly fled the car before it was found in Rose Bay, along with a carton of eggs and an empty jerrycan, police said.
The incident is one of the latest in a series of attacks targeting predominantly Jewish areas in Sydney. Strike Force Pearl was set up to deal with these recent attacks, and so far, 12 individuals have been charged.
Strike Force Pearl Commander Detective Superintendent Darren Newman said he could not confirm if the women who had eggs thrown at them were targeted because they were Jewish but that they were definitely profiled.
“At this point in time, I’ve been advised that it potentially was clothing worn by those young ladies as to why they were targeted,” said Detective Superintendent Newman.
The women reported the incident had occurred on one of the side streets off Campbell Parade at Bondi Beach, on Saturday at about 9:30pm. The crashed car containing eggs and a jerry can were found just after at about 10pm.
Detective Superintendent Newman confirmed that police “believe those incidents were linked”.
“To those individuals that were in the car last night, it might be best if you come forward straight away because we will track you down,” he said.
“What you’ve done last night is highly offensive, it’s criminal and we will do everything we possibly can to try and locate you.”
The car has also been potentially linked to a number of vehicles, houses and garage doors that were spray painted Saturday night, in Randwick and Kingsford, with “highly offensive antisemitic graffiti”.
Detective Superintendent Newman said 11 arrests have been made, as well as 66 charges laid and 12 investigations launched, with some of the attacks linked.
He ruled out any link between Saturday night’s attacks and a caravan found in Sydney’s north-west outskirts that contained explosives and addresses of Jewish targets.
Australian federal police are investigating whether overseas actors or others have paid local criminals to carry out antisemitic attacks.
