Hannah Green claims first major with LPGA Championship victory

Hannah Green
Hannah Green stunned the golfing world on Sunday after winning her first major title at the Women’s PGA Championship in Minneapolis.

Green shot a 72 for a nine-under total of 207 to win by one shot over world No 4 and defending champion Sung Hyun Park of South Korea.

The win is Green’s first victory on the LPGA tour and sees her become the first Australian woman to win a major title in 13 years.

The 22-year-old is just the third Australian woman to ever win a major golfing title. Karrie Webb and Jan Stephenson are the only other women to do so. Webb was the last Australian to win an LGPA Tour major in 2006.

This is the first time Green has contested a major, indicating her future in the sport is bright and only just beginning.

“I’m pretty much speechless,” said Green, who was overwhelmed with emotion after the win. “It really is surreal. I’ve always wanted to win in front of an Aussie crowd and even though I’m not in Australia, it was like that today. To win a major as my first event, I am over the moon.”

Green was ranked 114th in the world before this week and entered the tournament without having had a top 10 finish since a streak in February and March, when she excelled at the Women’s Australian Open coming 10th, 2nd at the Australian Ladies Classic and 8th at the Canberra Classic.

The 22-year old turned professional in 2016 and was named Rookie of the Year in 2017.
