Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles.
The 16 years will be additional to the current 23-year sentence he is serving in New York.
On 19 December, a Los Angeles jury convicted the disgraced Hollywood film producer of one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault against a model and actor, known as Jane Doe 1.
Jane Doe 1 addressed the court prior to the sentencing, saying the assault had left her traumatised. She testified that Weinstein assaulted her in a hotel room during an Italian film festival in Los Angeles in 2013.
“Before that night I was a very happy and confident woman. I valued myself and the relationship I had with God. I was excited about my future,” she said in court.
“Everything changed after the defendant brutally assaulted me.
“I thought I did something wrong because he chose me that night. I thought I did something wrong for him to do that to me. I soon became invisible to myself and to the world. I lost my identity. I was heartbroken, empty and alone.”
Weinstein pleaded not guilty to all charges and said he never engaged in non-consensual sex. He called the woman he was convicted of raping an “actress” who can “turn the tears on”.
Weinstein was acquitted of a separate charge of sexual battery against a massage therapist, and the jury also failed to reach a verdict on counts involving two other women, including Jennifer Siebel Newsom, an actor and producer, who is married to the Governor of California, Gavin Newson.
Siebel Newsom was referred to as Jane Doe 4 during the trial. She has since been publicly identified by her lawyer.
Los Angeles prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will retry Weinstein on the counts that did not reach a verdict.
Weinstein is appealing his previous New York conviction and its 23-year prison sentence.
