We’ve been running surveys of women’s ambition for more than five years now, identifying how ambitions have changed through the pandemic and through varying economic conditions, and determining the obstacles standing in the way of women’s achieving such ambitions.
Now, we’re doing it again.

Our 2023 survey on women’s ambition is open. We’re calling on all women to participate in the survey, sharing their ambitions for the next two years and what – if anything – they believe might get in the way.
We use the findings in stories across Women’s Agenda, and bring them into discussions we frequently facilitate at events, with policymakers, employers and advocates, to try and push anyone who can make a difference to women’s careers and lives to make the adjustments needed to do so.
The survey is made possible thanks to the support of AGSM at the University of NSW. The school has supported this research since its inception, seeing us publish our 2017 version, 2019 version, 2021 version and now what will soon be the 2023 version.
In 2021, as we were still living through the pandemic years, we learned things like that:
- Almost half (47 per cent) of women said COVID-19 had changed their ambitions for the next two years, due to its impact on work and home life
- 31 per cent said they are spending more time on domestic work
- 39 per cent said burnout may hinder their careers
- 36 per cent said they are looking to earn more over the next two years – the leading ambition.
What will we learn in 2023? Issues like inflation, cost of living, extreme weather events, and continued burnout are firmly on the national agenda, and are likely having an impact on the obstacles in the way of women’s ambitions.
And from these learnings ambitions, what recommendations can we make to ensure we can remove the obstacles in the way of women’s ambition and success?
We’re set to find out. And later, we’ll be heard to share what we learn — as we collate the responses for a special report in May 2023.
In the meantime, your participation is everything. Please take a moment to reflect on your career, your ambitions ahead, and fill out the survey. Your responses are anonymous, with all responses collated to form the results.
