How Chilean employers justify paying women less

Gender pay gap is a problem for most women globally but at least Australian women are able to openly discuss and debate it.

Chilean women don’t mention the gap for fear of losing their job.  Arguments for paying women less in Chile centre on the role of women in that country. They are seen as homemakers while men are seen as workers.

Statistics from a national survey show that in 2009 women earned 15.8 per cent less than men. The difference is 37 per cent among male and female graduates.

Chile’s Direccion del Trabajo (labour office) found that eliminating the gender gap would have a significant impact on poverty so perhaps it’s time they started talking about it.
