Women on social media are posting videos of themselves doing glute workouts from a “particular angle” in response to fitness entrepreneur Kayla Itsines, who criticised what she called the plethora of “highly sexualised” workout content she was seeing online.
Last week, 33-year Itsines said she was tired of seeing women on social media posting content of themselves at gyms from a “particular angle” during a glute workout.
“I don’t wanna see your ass,” Itsines said in the now-deleted video.
“I probably wouldn’t care if I didn’t have kids, I’ll be like, ‘you do you, boo’,” she continued. “I’m unfollowing you because I don’t want to see that, I don’t wanna see your ass, but you do you. However, I have a daughter, and I’m trying to be an example to women. No drinking, no drugs, no smoking, no highly sexualised content.”
“I’m scrolling, and she [my daughter] is sitting next to me, and I’m like ‘oh my God I don’t want you looking at another girl’s… from that angle,” she said.
“It’s just not something I want to see.”
Itsines went on to ask, “Am I old?” before bemoaning the fact that the content is “everywhere”.
Some of her followers have hit back at her comments by making their own content depicting exactly the sort of footage Itsines was critical about, and tagging her in the posts.
“Keep eating your fu**ing protein girls and showing off your phat ass,” one user captioned in a video of her squatting in gym shorts. Another user posted a similar workout, adding: “Good morning from Kayla Itsines’ favourite angle.”
Several users have since commented across Itsines’ various posts on her videos last week, including one who said — “This coming from the same Kayla Itsines that doesn’t wear anything but a crop top, ever.”
Several followers and users pointed out Itsines’ own style of online presentation.
“I don’t understand why you’d shame other women and also dress the exact same way and film the same?” one quipped.
