Almost every week, we are reminded of the shocking rates of domestic and family violence in Australia.
Twenty five women have been killed by violence in Australia so far this year, the majority by a current or former partner, or a family member known to them.
Every year, people of all genders, ages and backgrounds come together in Centennial Park in Sydney for the Walk for WAGEC, raising money to support women escaping violence.
The event aims to highlight just how much women lose and risk in leaving a home and violent partner, losses that go beyond the literal roof over her head. Women can also face significant costs due to relocation, as well as access to financial stability, employment, community and support systems.
This year’s Walk for WAGEC is a 10km walk aiming to raise $300,000 to help deliver crucial programs for women that provide holistic, wrap-around support to promote recovery, material aid, and essential items (like toiletries and food). Monies raised also support the building of financial independence and pathways for women escaping violence, as well as programs to enrich children’s development, and helping prevent violence from happening in the first place.
The Walk is addressing a serious cause. But each year the team creates a vibrant fundraising event, celebrating the community and aiming to offer something for everyone. This year’s event will include family-friendly entertainment, food from local vendors, and face painting for kids. There’s also a virtual option for those who want to take part in the event but can’t get to Centennial Park.
The 2024 event comes after a record $374,000 was raised in 2023, exceeding the original $250,000 target.
This year’s event is on Sunday 5 May. Registration is $25, children under 18 walk for free. And right now until the end of Wednesday, 24th April, Pepper Money is matching money raised. So get in now to register and donate to make the most of your participation.
You can also donate direct, which Pepper Money will also double on your behalf, until 5pm today. Find out more here.
