Laura Mueller, Hannah Schmitz: The first women to have Albert Park corner named in their honour

Laura Mueller and Hannah Schmitz (pictured above) will become the first women to have a circuit corner named in their honour at Melbourne’s Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit.

The honour recognises Mueller, a race engineer for TGR Haas F1 Team, and Schmitz, Head of Race Strategy for Oracle Red Bull Racing, as trailblazers in engineering and motorsport.

Turn 6 will have their names on it during the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, marking the first time in the circuit’s history that a corner has been dedicated to women. In a sport that has long been male-dominated, it’s a symbolic but important gesture.

Circuits across the globe have corners that are named after influential people. The recognition of the two women in Melbourne is part of the ‘In Her Corner’ initiative led by Engineers Australia and the Australian Grand Prix.

In 2025, Mueller made history as the first-ever female race engineer in Formula 1 after she was promoted into the role by Haas.

“The ‘In Her Corner’ initiative promotes the importance of ‘if you can see it, you can be it,’” Mueller said.

“To be a part of this acknowledgement so early on in my Formula 1 career is an honour, and I hope it motivates girls and young adults to pursue a career in STEM.”

Schmitz is considered a leading strategist in the sport, and has worked with Max Verstappen.

“I was always curious about how things work and loved cars,” Schmitz said, reflecting on her career. “For me, it has been an absolute honour to represent the team on the podium.”
