Leading run-scorer and wicket taker: Ellyse Perry’s new Ashes record

Ellyse Perry has set new records as the all-time leading run scorer and wicket taker in Women’s Ashes history.

Perry surpassed England’s Charlotte Edwards’ record of 1,532 runs in Ashes matches, when she scored 41 runs in the second innings, bringing her total to 1,552.

Perry’s 1,552 runs have been scored across 39 matches in T20, One-Day and Test formats. Also on Sunday, Perry took her 68th wicket in Ashes cricket, overtaking Katherine Blunt’s previous record of 67.

“Magnificent effort,” Julia Price, former Australian wicketkeeper, said on Fox Cricket. “That average as well is unbelievable.”

The Australian all-rounder has long been a fan favourite, and once again proved her worth as the Australians drew with England in a dramatic and thrilling contest.

Perry’s new records with both the bat and ball come less than a fortnight after she wasn’t selected in Australia’s T20 team.

Going into the Test, Perry has said she didn’t have a “point to prove”.

“If there is an opportunity and I’m in the side I really want to play a role for the team. We’re in a really great position with Australian cricket with the depth and talent that we have. It puts everyone on their toes in terms of form and performances and pushing the game forward,” she said.

“So I’m certainly no different.”
