Linda Burney and staff tried to help woman killed in Darwin stabbing

Darwin

Over the weekend, a 56-year-old man was charged with murder after he fatally stabbed his partner outside a hotel in Darwin.

The incident took place on Friday night, with the man killing a 51-year-old woman. The woman sought help inside the Doubletree Hilton, with police and paramedics called to the scene just before 6pm. It was believed to be a “domestic-related” incident.

“CCTV operators were able to direct police to the man, who was still in the area, and he was arrested without incident,” NT Police said in a statement.

“He has since been charged with murder and will appear before the court on Monday, 17 April 2023.”

Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney happened to be inside the hotel at the time of the incident, with her staff and hotel workers assisting the woman before emergency services arrived.

The woman received CPR from bystanders and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she died a short time later.

Burney said she comforted members of the woman’s family who were later on the scene.

“Together with staff from the hotel members of my staff provided assistance to the woman, and I comforted members of her family,” Burney said in a statement.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the woman’s family and her loved ones.

“I want to thank the hotel staff, the Northern Territory Police and the paramedics who attended.”

According to researchers at Destroy the Joint, the woman killed in Darwin is the 11th woman to be killed in Australia due to violence against women in 2023.
