Monica Meldrum has yet another prize to include on her long-list of accolades, with her healthy snack food company Whole Kids named organic Business of the Year.
Whole Kids, run by Monica and her husband James, produces Australia’s largest range of certified organic, additive free and allergen friendly snacks for kids. They sell their products both locally and internally, and have reached more than 2000 retail outlets, with business growing significantly in the past year alone.
Whole Kids is part of a growing industry of organic products worth $2.4 billion, according to the 2018 Market Report by Australian Organic.
Meldrum won the entrepreneur category at the first Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards in 2013. At the time, she said she started the business back in 2005 off the firm belief that kids deserve healthy food, while parents should be able to trust the brands they buy. It also followed a trip to Indonesia that changed her perspective of success and saw her vow to make a difference to children’s health.
Earlier this year, Monica was named the 2018 Small Business Champion Entrepreneur at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards. Meldrum said at the time that she and her husband threw everything they had into the business 12 years ago in order to go up against some of the biggest food brands in the world.
“We are thrilled to be recognised for this honour amongst our peers within the organic Industry,” Meldrum said on last night’s award.
“We’re proud to be part of a growing industry that’s committed to delivering quality products that contribute directly to the health of our customers and the long term sustainability of our environment. “
The awards were presented in Canberra on Wednesday by not-for-profit industry group Australian Organic. The group aims to ensure organic standards in Australia with an established certification scheme that verifies farmers and processors.
Other women to be recognised included Aimee Marks, the founder of feminine care brand, TOM Organic. Marks recently created a major advertising campaign featuring real and untouched mothers breastfeeding, as an opportunity to celebrate all types of mums, as part of its ‘tooshies by TOM’ product line.
Meanwhile, Mukti from Mukti Organics was named ‘best organic influencer” and Anni Brownjohn from Ozcanics received the Chairman Award.
