Dr Ruth Higgins SC has been named as the next Solicitor-General, the top legal adviser to the federal government.

Higgins, a leading commercial silk, is the first woman to be appointed to the role. Her appointment marks the first time both the first and second law officers in Australia are women.

Higgins will step into the role from June 8 for a five-year term, Attorney-General Michelle Rowland announced.

“I congratulate Dr Higgins on her appointment as Australia’s 12th Solicitor-General – the first woman to be appointed to this vitally important position,” Rowland said.

“The second law officer of the Commonwealth of Australia plays a significant role in promoting the integrity of the rule of law and trust in Government and public institutions.

“Dr Higgins’ experience, ability and acumen will see the Commonwealth well represented in significant legal matters, and I have every confidence in her ability to undertake this important work.”

Higgins is considered one of Australia’s leading competition law barristers and recently led the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) case into Star executives.

Higgins has over 30 years of legal experience, including close to 10 years as senior counsel.

In Australia, the Solicitor-General represents the Commonwealth in significant matters in court and provides advice to the government on questions of law, especially on the constitution and in areas of public law.

Higgins will replace the previous Solicitor-General, Dr Stephen Donaghue KC.
