Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr has shared a series of photos of the moment she proposed to her fiancée, Kristie Mewis.
The couple shared the photos on Instagram along with the caption: “September 1st, 2023 🤍”. Mewis had previously announced their engagement in an interview with People Magazine in early November.
“My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis said, referring to Kerr in that interview.
Messages of congratulations for Kerr and Mewis have swamped social media, with Kerr’s friends and fellow Matildas chiming in.
Matildas teammate Mackenzie Arnold said, “Here they are, love you guys x”.
Alanna Kennedy wrote “Congratulations lovers”, and Caitlin Foord wrote “Here it is 🥰”
Kerr and Mewis became engaged about two years after they first made their relationship public during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. They have been quite open with the public about their relationship, sharing photos of each other often on social media.
Previously Kerr shared with the UK publication Gaffer: “We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football. Football is 5 per cent of my life.”
“I was so proud that she was mine so I wanted to share it. I love her and I was so proud to be her girlfriend. I think it’s endearing to share your life with other people because I think if they can relate to you and you can maybe change their lives I think it’s important, especially with our platform, to share,” Mewis added.
