Sarah Abo’s emotional announcement shines light on pregnancy after loss

Today show host Sarah Abo has revealed she’s pregnant with her first child at 40, with the reactions to her announcement highlighting the importance of supporting those experiencing pregnancy after loss.

On the breakfast program, Abo revealed the emotional news of her pregnancy, surrounded by her colleagues.

Expecting a baby boy with her husband Cyrus Moran, Abo held back tears, saying “It hasn’t been the easiest journey to get here, which a lot of people I know have gone through and will go through.”

“I know that a lot of our viewers will be going through this too, and it’s not as easy as a lot of people think that it will be. It has been a bit of a bumpy ride but here we are … we’re almost half way now and things are going well, it’s good.”

Abo shared with viewers that she has previously suffered two miscarriages, including one last year, which makes her “cautious about sharing this news”.

“Obviously I’m so thrilled to be sharing with you all, but I’m still terrified,” said Abo.

“I’m still finding it hard to believe that it’s happening and I will lean in and enjoy it, but a lot of people understand what it’s like to have this cautious optimism.”

Abo said that through sharing the news, she hopes to help other women who have struggled with fertility issues and can relate to her experience.

Powerful moment of vulnerability

Abo’s co-host, Karl Stefanovic, sat next to her during the reveal, congratulating her on being brave and open with her story.

In a show of solidarity, Stefanovic shared his own experience, as a partner to his wife Jasmine, who had also suffered pregnancy loss.

“A lot of people won’t know this because Jas is a very private person, but we lost a couple as well, and you sit there as a man and think, ‘What could I have done? What did I do wrong?’ All those questions enter your mind,” Stefanovic said.

Founder and CEO of Pink Elephants Support Network Samantha Payne called the morning segment “a powerful moment of vulnerability”, pointing out that the interaction between Abo and Stefanovic offered the partner’s perspective in a particularly moving way.

“We often overlook the partners in this narrative, yet their grief and their resilience are a vital part of the story,” Payne wrote on LinkedIn.

“The way the team handled the announcement—with genuine consideration rather than just a ‘celebrity scoop’—sets a beautiful precedent for how we should all support one another through these milestones.”

“To Sarah: Thank you for your courage. We are standing in your corner, celebrating this chapter with you, and acknowledging everything it took to get here.”
