Sarah Snook joins other Aussie women nominated for Emmys

Sarah Snook has picked up her third Emmy acting nomination for her role in HBO series, Succession, joining a host of other Australian women who’ve received nods at the 75th Emmy Awards. 

Snook was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress in a drama series category in 2022 and 2020. 

Anna Torv is nominated for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in HBO’s The Last of Us, while US-based Australian director Kim Gehrig is nominated for Outstanding Commercial for her Apple ad The Greatest — a two and a half minute ad featuring a cast of individuals with disabilities using the innovative features on Apple products such as Door Detection, Sound Recognition, Voice Control. 

The ad, which aired in the UK, featured the song The Greatest, performed by Australian Indigenous female choir “Spinifex Gum”.

Earlier this year, Gehrig was awarded the Director’s Guild of America prize for directorial achievement in commercials, and won a Grand Prix in the Entertainment Lions for Music last month

Australian composer Allyson Newman picked up a nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for her work on the Showtime series “The L Word: Generation Q”. The graduate of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music moved to Los Angeles to study film scoring at the University of Southern California in the early 2000s. She has scored music for Emmy Winning TV series Childrens Hospital and Midge Costin’s 2019 documentary, “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound.”

Succession picked up the most nominations this year with a total of 27. The Last of Us secured 24 nominations, while “The White Lotus” picked up 23 and Ted Lasso – 21. 

For the first time in Emmy history, a record number of Black women have been nominated in a single acting category — For Best Supporting Comedy Actress; the nominees include Ayo Edebiri for FX’s The Bear, Jessica Williams for Apple TV+’s Shrinking, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph for ABC’s Abbott Elementary. 

This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Monday September 18, though due to the ongoing writers strike in the US., delays will likely to push the event to later this year.
