Sussan Ley becomes first woman to lead the Liberal Party

Sussan Ley

Sussan Ley has been elected Liberal Party leader, becoming the first woman to hold the role.

In a leadership ballot held in Canberra today, Ley won the leadership ballot against Angus Taylor by 29 votes to 25.

Ted O’Brien was elected as deputy leader.

Ley replaces Peter Dutton, who lost his seat of Dickson at the election and is no longer in parliament.

Ley’s election as Liberal leader is a win for the moderate and centre-right factions within the party. Ley is believed to be the best chance the party has of winning back former Liberal voters, particularly women, who deserted the party over consecutive elections in 2022 and 2025.

It comes after a catastrophic defeat for the Liberal Party at the recent federal election, with the party only winning 42 seats in the house of representatives and losing significant ground in the senate.

Ley’s elevation to Liberal Party leader comes after David Littleproud retained the leadership of the Nationals on Monday, after facing a leadership challenge from Matt Canavan.
