Victorian man charged with murder after 79yo woman found fatally stabbed in Brisbane

A Victorian man has been charged with murder after a 79-year-old woman was found unresponsive with stab wounds at a home in Brisbane on Monday.

Emergency services were called to a home on Chestnut Place in The Gap at about 4:20pm, where the woman was declared dead.

Shortly after 6:30pm on the same day, federal police arrested a 40-year-old man at Brisbane Airport. Police allege this man and the deceased woman knew each other.

Detective Acting Inspector Mick Jones described the scene at the home as “horrible” and that it was confronting for first responders and members of the public on the street.

Jones said that background investigations led police to find the man at the airport.

Witnesses told police a man was seen leaving the home and a large operation, including a police helicopter and dog squad, was launched to search the area.

The man has been charged with murder (domestic violence offence), and he is due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court later today.

The investigation is ongoing and a crime scene has been set up at the home on Chestnut Place.

The 79-year-old woman is the 15th woman killed this year and the 118th killed since January 1 last year, according to Sherele Moody from Femicide Watch.
