‘We need to double down on gender equality’: MECCA launches M-POWER Collective

M-POWER

MECCA Brands has launched a new chapter of its M-POWER initiative, partnering with a range of remarkable non-profit organisations working to educate, elevate and empower women and girls.

Since 2017, M-POWER, a social change movement, has invested in programs to support education and economic opportunity for women and girls.

Now, MECCA has curated the M-POWER Collective, a group of organisations working to progress gender equality. The 17 organisations are working in different ways across areas like education, health, safety and wellbeing, economic participation and political representation.

In 2019, MECCA M-POWER set a goal to support 10,000 girls facing social and economic barriers to complete secondary school. The goal is on track to be met at the end of this year – two years ahead of schedule.

Now, M-POWER’s reach is set to broaden through the M-POWER Collective.

The collective includes: AllPlay, Australians Investing In Women, Bridge It, CAMFED, The Equality Institute, First Australians Capital, Flourish Girl, Global Sisters, International Women’s Development Agency, Karrkad Kanjdji Trust, The Man Cave, Missing Perspectives, National Gallery off Victoria, Skyline Education Foundation, Stars Foundation, Wellsprings for Women, and YWCA Aotearoa.

Speaking in Melbourne at an event with M-Power Collective members on Monday, MECCA founder and co-CEO Jo Horgan said the initiative was all about advancing the rights and opportunities for women and girls, both here in Australia and globally.

“MECCA is 25 years old. We are grown up, and we need to double down on gender equality,” she said.

“This gender equality challenge we have is such an important one for everyone.”

M-POWER’s new website is a place to support the work of organisations progressing gender equality, learn about why gender equality matters, and connect with a like-minded community.

Women’s Agenda is working with MECCA M-POWER to support their content on women and girls, and spotlight the non-profits within the M-POWER Collective.
