Woman dies in Darwin after being stabbed multiple times in CBD

A 28-year-old woman has died in the Darwin after being stabbed multiple times with a knife in the CBD.

Northern Territory Police said they received a report that a group was involved in an altercation on Mitchell Street in Darwin at about 8.20pm on Tuesday. Police and paramedics attended to find the woman “with multiple stab wounds, bleeding quite heavily”.

The woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, but died shortly afterwards.

Another woman involved in the altercation also sustained non-life threatening injuries.

A 31-year-old woman has been taken into police custody and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

It is understood the three women were known to each other and there was a group around them.

“Police were able to identify an altercation involving the two [injured] ladies in Knuckey Street, around the corner from where they were located,” he said.

“Further CCTV reviewed identified a further female involved in that altercation. 

“She was able to be located and was found some distance away [and] she was taken into custody.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said investigations are in their early stages as detectives work to understand the circumstances of the assault.

The incident is being investigated by the Major Crime Squad.

The number of women killed due to violence in Australia in 2022 has now risen to 50, according to Destroy the Joint.
