Women in leadership advocate Belinda Hutchinson takes new role at Sydney University

QBE chairman Belinda Hutchinson will be returning to the campus where she studied, having just been appointed Chancellor of the University of Sydney, replacing NSW Governor Marie Bashir in the role.

Hutchison is an economics graduate of Sydney University and will now become it’s 18th Chancellor. Her appointment brings extensive business experience and contacts to the post, matching the University of NSW’s move a number of years ago to appoint serial company director David Gonski as it’s Chancellor.

Hutchison said in a statement she feels honoured to have been elected to the role, noting that world-class tertiary education and research are critical to Australia’s economic and social future.

Hutchinson is a director on the boards of St Vincent’s Health, AGL Energy and a number of not-for-profits. Her board career has been diverse, having also served with Telstra, Coles, TAB, Sydney Water, Macquarie Bank and Energy Australia. She is also the president of Chief Executive Women, and has long been a strong advocate for women in leadership.

She will relinquish a number of her NFP board positions in order to make time for the new role, and this week resigned as deputy chair of the Centre for Independent Studies.

Professor Bashir’s five and a half year tenure with the university ended in December.
