Pop star P!nk has issued a short response to trolls on Twitter after receiving a series of nasty comments about her appearance.
The comments came after photos emerged of the pop star attending the 30th annual John Wayne Odyssey Ball in Beverly Hills, a benefit honouring the work of her close friend and dedicated cancer researcher, Dr Maggie DiNome.
Her social media accounts were inundated with nasty comments about her figure, suggesting she needed to lose weight. P!nk began sharing the attacks on her own social media accounts, which prompted messages of support from her fans. As more and more of these kinds of offensive comments were posted, the pop star decided to write a response.
She penned a witty, dry note to her critics, saying that she feels beautiful despite their evident concern about her appearance.
“I can see that some of you are concerned about me from your comments about my weight,” she wrote.
She expressed her disappointment that her appearance was being considered more worthy topic for debate than the purpose of the event she was attending – curing cancer.
“You’re referring to the pictures of me from last night’s cancer benefit that I attended to support my dear friend Dr. Maggie DiNome. She was given the Duke Award for her tireless efforts and stellar contributions to the eradication of cancer.”
“But unfortunately, my weight seems much more important to some of you.”
P!nk then addressed the issue head on, saying she felt great in her dress regardless of how others felt about it.
“While I admit my dress didn’t photograph as well it did in my kitchen, I will also admit that I felt very pretty. In fact, I felt beautiful,” she wrote.
“Please don’t worry about me. I’m not worried about me… I am perfectly fine, perfectly happy, and my healthy, voluptuous and crazy strong body is having some much deserved time off.”
“Thanks for your concern. Love, cheesecake,” she signed off.
The inspiring, blunt response has resulted in a flurry of support and gratitude from her fans. So far, her tweet of the message has been retweeted 11,000 times. She has since been responding to and reposting hundreds of comments from fans promoting positive body image.
P!nk is not the only celebrity sick of the scrutiny.
Acclaimed Australian actress Cate Blanchett has made headlines for ridiculing a new red carpet routine involving women showing off their perfectly manicured hands.
Blancett joked about the routine, called ‘Mani Cam’, saying it represents a troubling pattern in Hollywood.
‘The way women are asked about those red-carpet moments. Oh my God. It’s just a dress!” She told Harper’s Bazaar.
“People forget the fact that women are up there (on the red carpet) because they’ve given extraordinary performances. It’s a wonderful excuse to dress up and have F.U.N. But let’s not forget the work.”
“Next it will be, ‘What brand tampon are you wearing?’” she joked.
P!nk and Blanchett have also been joined by stars like Amy Poehler and Reese Witherspoon in their campaign against sexism in Hollywood. Poehler and Witherspoon recently endorsed the #AskHerMore movement encouraging entertainment journalists to avoid superficial questions about female celebrities’ appearance in favour of substantive questions about their stellar careers.
