Yahoo! It’s a boy! Cue the work/life debate

Marissa Mayer has given birth to her first child just months after taking the helm of Fortune 500 company Yahoo!, and already the focus has shifted to her next due date: the one where she returns to the office.

In true Silicon Valley style, the birth of Mayer’s first child was announced through twitter, via a tweet from her husband.

“Baby boy Bogue born last night. Mom (@marissamayer) and baby are doing great–we couldn’t be more excited!”

The announcement of her pregnancy on July 16, the same day she was named Yahoo CEO, garnered widespread attention, and was particularly notable as Mayer was the first ever woman to be appointed CEO of a Fortune 500 tech company while pregnant.

In an interview with Fortune magazine shortly after her appointment, she said she did not plan to take extended maternity leave, breathing new life into the ongoing debate about working mothers and “having it all”.

According to Anne Espiritu, a spokeswoman for Yahoo, Mayer is true to her word, and will work from home, continue to lead the company and “is involved in all critical decisions making”.

Mayer is planning to return to the office in about one to two weeks, Espiritu said.

Now that she’s given birth, the ongoing debate that was triggered with her pregnancy announcement doesn’t look to dissipate. If reactions online are any indication, Mayer’s postpartum plans have sparked another round.

“I just don’t know the point of having a baby if you have no time to care for it, not even when it is a newborn.” wrote one poster on the Urbanbaby blog.
