Australian Georgia Amoore was drafted as the sixth overall pick to the Washington Mystics at the WNBA Draft on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old from Ballarat is Australia’s highest-selected player since Liz Cambage was taken at pick two by the Tulsa Shock in 2011.
Amoore, who stands 5”6 feet tall, reflected on her selection, saying: “As long as people call me too short, I’ve been working on how to counteract that.”
“I know I have to work in different ways and use my brain a bit more, but with my competitive background, I’ve got that dog in me.”
“I’ve taken every opportunity that’s opened up and now I’m here,” she said.
A point guard, Amoore plays for the Kentucky Wildcats, but played in the BML1 for Ballarat Rush in 2019. She played four years with Virginia Tech before transferring to Kentrucky for her final year.
With Kentucky, she averaged 19.6 points per game and started 31 games in the NCAA season.
In her 2024-25, Amoore’s statistics were impressive in multiple categories, as she joined star players Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu as the only D-1 players to record 2,300+ points and 800+ assists in their career.
Attending the WNBA orange carpet, Amoore explained to the media that her outfit was a collaboration with Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook, who designed the outfit for the clothing brand called Honor the Gift. Amoore said it was amazing to work with Westbrook.
The WNBA is one of the premier leagues in the world, and speaking to the road ahead in the top-tier franchise, Amoore said “iron sharpens iron”.
“When you get thrown into that situation, you either adapt or drown,” she said. “I’m excited to go and be challenged mentally and grow my game.”
