Australian golfer Hannah Green has won the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore by sinking birdies in the final three holes.
Green, 27, finished the tournament on 13-under-par to record a one-shot victory, ahead of France’s Céline Boutier.
Along with the title and trophy, she netted just over $400,000 in prize money and became just the fourth Australia to win five LPGA events.
This victory brings Green a big step forwards to the Paris Olympics as she’s now in prime position to join fellow West Australian and World No. 5 Minjee Lee, on the national Olympic team for the second time.
Her win took place at the same course at Sentosa Golf Club where she previously suffered a heartbreaking runner-up finish.
“A few years ago, I almost had this trophy on my hands and made two bogeys coming down the last [stretch],” Green said. “So it’s almost like it was meant to be today for me holing those two putts on the last two holes,” said Green, holding her trophy after the win.
“I’m so happy to have this in my hands.”
“I knew that I needed to go low today in order to win because the conditions were a little bit softer today than the last few days.”
“I was talking to my coach on the phone last night, and he’s like, ‘Yeah try to get as many birdies in early as possible’.”
“So I like to make things a little bit interesting.”
In total, Green made six birdies against one bogey– on the par-four 10th hole.
Green, who recently married fellow professional golfer Jarryd Felton, said she’s “always loved coming to Singapore” and felt a lot of support from the fans on the last couple of holes at the tournament.
“You have to take these highs when they come because it doesn’t always come and golf can be a learning sport sometimes,” said Green.
Japan’s Yuna Nishimura, South Korea’s Mi Hyang Lee and Canadian Brooke Henderson tied for third on 9-under.
