'Given us a voice': Matildas world cup kits to feature period protection

‘They’ve given us a voice’: Matildas world cup playing kits to feature innovative period protection

A “true representation” of the squad. That’s how Matildas star Ellie Carpenter described the playing kits her team will wear at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup which showcase patterns of green and gold along with white socks to celebrate a “diverse country and community”.

“They really represent us, what our beliefs are and what we think is important; they put that into the process of designing the kit,” Carpenter said.

“We’re really grateful that they’ve listened to us and given us a voice to show what is important and what we believe in.

“I’m very grateful to be wearing this kit in this upcoming tournament. To pull on that green and gold jersey for Australia, it’s very exciting and an honour I’ll never take for granted.”

Part of the “true representation” expressed by Carpenter included Nike, and Football Australia, considering concerns expressed by the squad about their periods. For the first time, the Matildas kit will feature period protection in the base layer under the shorts.

Backed by women’s research the design integrates “leak protection” into the shorts with a combination of a laminate gusset, liner, and short construction.

Football Australia chief executive officer James Johnson said the organisation had been “committed to ensuring the Matildas would become the global iconic brand they are today”.

“In 2023, we will experience a special moment as we welcome people from all over the world to our backyard to celebrate a monumental event in sport that leaves a transformative legacy for football in this country and Australian society.

“This occasion is generations in the making and since winning the bid, Football Australia has been committed to ensuring the Matildas would become the global iconic brand they are today.

“To see the kits on the pitch is going to be such a special and unifying moment for everyone involved in the game – from the pioneers of the past, the players of today, the staff, the fans, and future generations of Australians.”
