A handful of Australian women have appeared in a list of the world’s 100 most influential individuals on gender equality published overnight.

The list recognises the most influential activists, academics, politicians, public servants and others shaping gender policy in 2019. It includes former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, along with head of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency Libby Lyons and academic Professor Marian Baird, director of the Women and Work Research Group at the University of Sydney Business School.

They appear alongside Melinda Gates, Michelle Obama, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Tarana Burke, Winnie Byanyima and numerous other impressive women, in the list prepared by Apolitical, a peer-to-peer lending platform for governments. The 100 has been put together based on more than 9000 nominations from around the world.

Apolitical executive chairman Lisa Witter said the list aims to showcase, “the inspirational people who are pioneering change and shaping gender policy around the globe.”

The list also includes a ‘young minds’ section, featuring activists Nadia Murad and Amika George, Daughters of Eve co-founder Nimco Ali, Planned Parenthood president Leana Wen and actress Emma Watson.
